In Memory of Houdini

August 4, 2010 at 9:17 PM (Memorable Moments, Pets)

Today the second cat to ever enter my life, Houdini, died.  He was 20 years old and I was only 9 years old when we brought him home as a kitten.  Houdini was a great cat.  He was all country.  One of his trademarks was that he could never make up his mind about being outside or inside.  He would come inside for 5 minutes and then meow at the door wanting to be let out.  It was a constant dance of letting him in and out, in and out, in and out.  He was tough.  He’d show up all the time with cuts, sores, and chunks of his ear missing. Gross, but true.

Houdini was always very fond of my stepdad and when he passed away, Houdini did a great job of keeping my mom company in the painful months that followed.  When I was in NC just a few weeks ago I felt like it could be the last time that I saw him alive so I made sure to spend extra time with him.  He was losing weight and I could just tell that it wouldn’t be much longer.  Normally he didn’t like to be picked up and held a lot but he was much more patient with me on the last visit.  I’ll treasure those last moments.

I’ll miss you Houdini.  It won’t be the same when I return to NC soon.

  1. Seeing my mentor for the first time in over a year.  And then riding across campus in his convertible.
  2. Watching Ben use a leaf blower for the first time ever.
  3. Watching Ben pause carefully while bagging leaves to spare a grand daddy long legs spider.
  4. Using my first digital SLR camera ever (Nikon D5000 in case you’re curious) and loving every second!
  5. Finishing data collection for my dissertation!

Memorable Moments

  1. Having a great dinner with my awesome friends Kenna, Scott, and Jenna in Clemson.  Talking about really inappropriate and disgusting things while eating (e.g. pig’s feet, chicken feet, sheep testicles).
  2. The welcome message written on the dry erase board in Jenna’s guest bedroom — “Welcome, Stephanie!  (aka Dr. Fishel-Brown)  You rock!  Go, dissertation, go!”
  3. The clouds on my drive to Clemson.  They were photograph worthy but unfortunately I couldn’t pull over easily.

Memorable Moments

November 1, 2009 at 1:14 PM (Food, Humor, Memorable Moments, Relationships)

  1. My first time ever making a formal event out of going to yard sales.
  2. Buying my first apron ever from a local draft show–handmade by a sweet lady named Norma at least in her 70s whose “business cards” consisted of her hand written name and a phone number on a piece of paper.
  3. Finding out that Ben has NEVER carved a pumpkin!  Needless to say, we’ll be carving one next year.
  4. Making homemade chili for the first time ever.
