Yes, We Are Still Alive

April 29, 2009 at 5:54 PM (Family, Friends, Wedding)

It has been a while since we’ve posted.  Yes, we are still alive.  We have a big wedding shower on Saturday.  There will be over 40 people at our house for the event.  Family and friends begin arriving into town tomorrow and leaving Sunday or Monday.  I also had my bachelorette party this past weekend.  So, there are several things to catch up on.  I will write longer posts soon but I just wanted to let you know that we are alive and breathing.  In fact, things are going great.  Hectic but great.  🙂

What’s Up With These Crazy Fundamentalist Muslims?

April 21, 2009 at 10:06 PM (Humor, Politics, Rants)

EDIT:  After I wrote and posted this entry, this article was available on CNN.com.  I hate being right.

Well, before I get started ranting and raving like a lunatic, I am going state my warning to you all.  This post will be littered, nay, filled to the brim, with my opinion.  This is the only warning I’m going to give the faint of heart before proceeding.  Also, I’d like to give a shout out to Amazing Ben (no relation) at BadassOfTheWeek.com.  I’ve linked parts of his site wherever possible because it’s the best way to bring in historical references, but in a fun and foul mouthed way. Saturday Happenings

April 19, 2009 at 12:57 AM (Family, Friends, Home Improvement, Sports, Wedding)

Ben and I have had a very busy weekend already.  Ben made us a yummy breakfast of eggs and pancakes before we each headed out to take care of business.  My friend Talissa and baby Mazie met me at Chris Nicholson Salon & Spa for my wedding hair trial run.  The experience was fun and stressful.  I’ve NEVER had a professional updo.  I never went to prom in high-school and I’ve never had an updo for any other occasion.

I went in with pictures of some half-updos that I found online (for example, this one and this one).  However, the stylist was very concerned about the moisture on the glacier and my “do” holding its shape.  So, she convinced me to try a full updo.  I wasn’t thrilled about the first updo that she did which was frustrating for both of us.  But, the second updo was better.  I was absolutely exhausted after spending 2 hrs at the salon.  It’s hard choosing a style for yourself based on zero experience.  Unfortunately our wedding setting doesn’t allow me to have my ideal hair style, but I think the style she chose will work just fine.

While I was at the salon, Ben took the Civic in for an oil change.  He also headed to Lowes to buy some switchplates, weed eater oil, and a window washing contraption.  A few months ago my mom gave us my stepdad’s weed eater (he passed away in June 2007).  It hasn’t been used in over 2 yrs.  Well, with some manual reading and throttle tweaking, Ben was able to successfully use it to chop down the jungle in our front yard.

When I returned home, Ben grilled lunch for us.

After lunch, Ben finished weed eating and I worked on a photo project for the house.  While sorting through some photos, I found some pics of myself and my brother, Robert, as kids.  Check them out below.  It was fun walking down memory lane.

After the weed eating and photo stuff, we washed the bay window in our smaller living room.  We were finally able to find a pole long enough to reach the window.  Yay!

I spent the remainder of the evening relaxing, reading, blogging, etc. while Ben and our friend Jon spent the evening watching the UFC fight at Bailey’s, a local sports bar.

What did you do this weekend?

Inspirational Weight Loss and Healthy Living Blogs

April 15, 2009 at 6:10 PM (Fitness, Food, Healthy Living, Inspirational, Notable Notes, Weight Loss)

One of my favorite hobbies is to read people’s blogs.  I find so many ideas and so much inspiration from them.  I’ve decided to list some of my favorite weight loss / healthy living blogs for you.  Please check them out!  I highly recommend each and every one of them.

Weight Loss

  • My Angle on Weight Loss — Jason, the author, has transformed his body and his life through running and making better food choices.  He has lost over 130 lbs.  He posts very regularly and is very open and honest about his journey and his daily struggles.  On the outside he looks fit and healthy but he writes about the struggles that continue to plague him.  I recommend that you start reading here.
  • Just Sweet Enough — Nicole, the author, maintains an amazing blog with awesome photos and food ideas.  She has lost 180 lbs.  She often posts photos of the foods that she eats.  I love getting healthy food ideas from her blog.  She is very positive and upbeat and an awesome inspiration for us all.  I recommend that you start reading here.
  • Destination: 175 — Angela is someone else who continues to inspire me.  She has lost almost 100 lbs through diet and exercise.  She writes a very frank, and at times, a very humorous blog.  She write about her emotional and physical transformation as she puts her past behind her and raises 2 children by herself.  I recommend that you start reading here.
  • PastaQueen –Jennette is a blogger and a book author.  At her highest, she weighed 372 lbs.  She has since lost over half her body weight.  She’s a funny lady who makes me laugh pretty regularly.  I recommend that you start reading here.

Healthy Living

Technically all of the blogs above fall into this category as well.  However, I decided to break them into two groups since the “Weigh Loss” blogs are written by individuals that have lost a significant amount of weight.  The “Healthy Living” blogs are just as inspirational although the authors do not focus on weight loss.

  • Green and Crunchy — Sheri is a wife and mom of 5 kids.  She is a raw foodist.  I am constantly inspired to try new foods after reading her blog.  She and her family also live a unique lifestyle.  I really enjoy learning from and reading about her family.
  • Kristen’s Raw — Kristen is a raw vegan chef.  Although I’m not a raw foodist, I try to eat a whole foods diet as much as possible.  Her blog provides me with unique food ideas that involve fresh (i.e. non-processed) ingredients.

I hope you get as much from these wonderful blogs as I do!

Spring Fever and Container Gardening

April 13, 2009 at 6:06 PM (Gardening, Home Improvement, Saving Money, Simplifying Life)

Ben and I had a great weekend.  Ben worked half a day on Friday and I got off work an hour early.  We lounged around the house and enjoyed our Friday together.

We stayed super busy on Saturday and Sunday.  We have wanted to add a little something to our entry way and to the outside of the yard in general.  We aren’t financially or logistically ready to tackle any major landscaping projects so we thought we would just make a couple of container gardens.

On Saturday we shopped around for a couple of matching red planters for the entry way deck.  Our friend Talissa had previously told me about a greenhouse / nursery near my work called Kelli Green Greenhouse and Nursery.  We headed there with our new planters.  We had the most amazing experience.  The owner, Elaine, helped us design a beautiful container full of plants based on our plant location and maintenance criteria.  We rushed home and immediately assembled our 2 matching container gardens.  We also filled 2 smaller pots (that we had already owned) with plants that we purchased.  We were absolutely thrilled with the results.  In fact, we were so thrilled that we did the same exact thing on Sunday!  We bought 2 more planters, spent lots of time with Elaine (1.5 hours), and assembled 2 more container gardens–this time for the back patio.  The back patio containers contain a couple of edible plants (chives and purple sage) which I’m excited about.

Check out all of the photos below!  Spring is in the air and I love it!

We already owned this pot and decided to finally plant something in it.
